Myrto Ashe, M.D., M.P.H.
GMOs, when incorporated into food, whether it be fresh, processed, or factory-raised, pose several difficult problems which could threaten our health. As a family physician in practice 25 years, I have seen dozens if not hundreds of medications pulled off the market for their deadly effects. And yet, drugs are tested extensively before being approved. GMOs were not tested to the same standard. The wisest thing to do at this time is to label foods containing GMOs, so that individuals can be free to make a decision based on how we understand the research studies done so far.
Speaking Schedule: July
Dr. Myrto Ashe, M.D. is a board-certified family physician with 20 years experience in the conventional medical paradigm and is now practicing “Functional Medicine”. Dr. Ashe grew up
in Canada, attended medical school at McGill University in Montreal, then completed family practice residency at Brown University. She obtained a Masters Degree in public health from the University of California at Berkeley, and completed a preventive medicine residency there.
She specializes in stubborn or persistent medical issues that haven’t resolved with other approaches, or seem to require the ongoing use of medication. We have been trained to believe that illnesses such as asthma and allergies, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol issues, autoimmune illness, and ADHD, are chronic conditions that require the ongoing use of medication. However, in many cases, they can be improved or eliminated by uncovering the underlying dysfunction.
Functional medicine offers an approach to chronic illness informed by the most recent science, and a willingness to believe that the body has a tendency to return to health when properly supported. Functional medicine thrives on individualizing treatment to each particular patient, taking into account genetics and past medical history.
Her practice is consultation-based: she does not take over from your primary care doctor. She reviews your medical history, and designs a treatment plan, aimed at correcting the dysfunction underlying your symptoms. You heal from chronic infections, retrain your immune system, reducing the influence of stress, and replenish nutrients.

It’s high time the American people learned that genetically engineered foods are illegally on the market. Almost no one knows that the FDA broke the law by allowing them to be sold without prior proof of safety – and that it covered up the warnings of its scientific staff and repeatedly lied in order to get away with it.
Because of this fraud, for fifteen years America’s families have been regularly ingesting a group of experimental foods that the FDA’s own experts had previously determined to be unduly hazardous to human health.
Speaking Schedule: September 11 – Nov. 6
Steven M. Druker is a public interest attorney who founded the Alliance for Bio-Integrity, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting technologies that foster human and environmental health and addressing the problems of those that do not. As executive director of the Alliance, he organized a lawsuit against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that forced it to divulge its files on genetically engineered foods. This revealed that politically appointed administrators had covered up the extensive warnings of their own scientists about the unusual risks of these foods and have engaged in a comprehensive scheme of deception since 1992. In organizing the suit, he assembled an unprecedented coalition of eminent scientists and religious leaders to stand with his organization as co-plaintiffs – the first time scientists had sued a federal administrative agency on the grounds that one of its policies is scientifically unsound.
He is a prominent commentator on the risks of genetically engineered (GE) foods and has been invited to make presentations throughout the world. He’s been featured in numerous articles in newspapers and magazines on five continents and has appeared on many nationally broadcast television and radio programs (such as NPR’s The Connection and The Cleveland City Club; various BBC interviews; and Australia’s equivalent of The Today Show). He’s been a featured speaker at symposia at the British House of Commons and the National Congress of Brazil and at press conferences sponsored by the Brazilian Medical Association, the Swedish Consumers Association, and the Green Party members of the European Parliament.
He has served on several expert panels (including the food safety panels at conferences held by the National Research Council and the FDA); given lectures at numerous universities (including the Biological Laboratories at Harvard, Tel Aviv University, and the main agricultural university in Denmark); and met with government officials in a number of nations, including the UK’s Environmental Minister and the heads of food safety for France, Australia, Ireland, and Germany. In 1998, he was invited to the White House Executive Offices to discuss environmental risks of GE crops with an interagency task force of the President’s Council on Environmental Quality.
On invitation, he published articles on GE food in The Congressional Quarterly Researcher; Pacific World, a leading ecological magazine in New Zealand; and The Parliament Magazine, an influential Brussels-based journal covering EU policy issues. In May 2004, The Financial Times published his comment on GE food and the deceptions of the U.S. government.
He has extensive academic background in the history and philosophy of science and in human development and ethics – and has lectured extensively in these fields at universities and for professional groups, including presentations at the Center for Moral Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an institute of the American Bar Association. He co-authored the introductory and final chapters of Higher Stages of Human Development, published by Oxford University Press, and wrote a chapter on ethical development for Transcendence and Mature Thought in Adulthood, published by Rowman and Littlefield.
He majored in philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, received a special award for “Outstanding Accomplishment” in that field, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year, and graduated with “Great Distinction in General Scholarship.” He also received his Juris Doctor from U.C. Berkeley and was elected to both the Law Review and the Order of the Coif (the legal honor society).
“When potential risks and documented harms are determined to be greater than the benefits, then any sane, civil society would say no to any such fruits. GMOs —the latest fruit agricultural biotechnology—is rotten at the core, biologically alien, aberrant, bioethically abhorrent, and never before present in our fields, foods, beverages and bodies. Genetically engineered crops also have adverse impacts on wildlife, the environment. No other prior product of human ingenuity is such an invasive, disruptive and pervasive threat to the integrity and sanctity of life itself.”
Speaking Schedule: October

The most vulnerable of our society, our children, are now the laboratory experiment. As pediatricians, we are seeing an epidemic of digestive, immunologic, and neurologic abnormalities that is changing the face of families, schools and society. The extrapolation from the little scientific data that exists on the effects of GMOs on the intestine, it is now clear that our children likely too, have intestinal damage which is linked to the high rise of the other disorders. There must be a paradigm shift that places children as a priority over profit.
Speaking Schedule: September and October

I am passionate for 3 reasons:
1. We should have a right to know so we can have the right to choose what we want to eat and feed our family and what kind of ag we want to support
2. It is more than a health issue where the research which should be done still has not been done- – it is the control of the world’s food supply and the inputs required to produce it by a handful of biotech companies – people should know that when they buy GMO and they should be free to choose if they want to support it knowingly or not
3. GMO ag also reduces diversity which is dangerous to our food security in terms of potential attack by plant specific pests and diseases
Speaking Schedule: Once or twice in September/October
In 1986, Bob’s company Montana Flour & Grains introduced the natural food industry to an ancient Egyptian wheat, called khorasan (similar to durum wheat). This grain was marketed under his own brand name, KAMUT®, (the ancient Egyptian word for wheat). Through the trademark, Bob has been able to preserve an ancient grain and guarantee it has not been genetically modified or altered. KAMUT® khorasan wheat is grown under strict production guidelines and is exclusively grown organically.
Bob Quinn has taken on an influential role in farming, even inspiring state leader, U.S. Senator, Jon Tester, to become one of Kamut International’s growers. Over 2000 different KAMUT® Khorasan brand products are being marketed through the world providing a new, sustainable crop for many organic farmers. Bob, a Farming Futurist, is always looking for ways to improve and sustain the land. With two partners from Germany, he formed WindPark Solutions America, which was responsible for the development of Montana’s first large scale wind farm.
Continuing to be at the forefront of farming developments, Bob works closely with Montana State University personnel on testing of crops, including dry land vegetables for local markets, as well as new farming methods. These systems may be the next wave adapted to the northern plains and will provide a substitute for the use of conventional fertilizer, pesticides, summer fallow and diesel fuel.
On a mission to educate and farm eco-consciously, Bob is currently studying dry land vegetable production and a project designed to grow and process enough straight vegetable oil (SVO) on his farm to run all the tractors and combines for the farm.
Robert “Bob” Quinn—the 2007 recipient of the Montana Organic Association Lifetime of Service Award—is a progressive leader in promoting organic and sustainable agriculture throughout the state of Montana, and the rest of the world.
Can answers to world hunger, human health problems, and environmental deterioration be found in the genetic engineering of our food supply? That’s what Monsanto would have us believe, but all the evidence points in a decidedly different direction. In Greek mythology, it is said that when Pandora opened her box, all the evils of the world were released and could not be recalled. In allowing the widespread planting of transgenic seeds for food, have we opened up Pandora’s Pantry?
Genetic engineering presents us with problems unprecedented, not only in the history of science, but in the history of life on earth. We now have the capacity to redesign living organisms at the genetic level. All living organisms, plant and animal, are the products of some three billion years of evolution. Have we transgressed a barrier that we should have respected? It is not possible to recall a new form of life. The plants and animals we are creating will survive long after we are gone. We are guilty of no less than an irreversible violation of the integrity of the biosphere.
We have allowed Frankenfoods into the food supply without thorough testing. The consequences to both human health and to the environment have every potential to be disastrous, and to endure beyond our imagining.

I am passionate about GMO’s because: GMO’s are unlabeled, mostly untested, and they are in most of the foods that Americans eat. There is significant reason to believe that consumption of GMO’s could be dangerous to humans, and that the massive use of roundup is proving toxic to our environment. The vast majority of Americans support the labeling of GMO products, and we deserve to know what we’re eating and to make informed choices. I believe that the GMO issue represents a key point of intervention as we seek to reclaim our food systems from the controlling grip of big agribusiness and put our farms back into service of the health and vitality of we, the people.
